Become a Canvas Observer!

The main use of the observer role in Canvas is to link a parent/guardian to a student. Observers can view courses and be linked to a student or multiple students. Observers cannot submit work on behalf of the students. However, they can see student grades, assignments and events.

Observers can:

  • View student grades
  • View modules and see due dates and point values
  • View assignments, discussions, files, quizzes and outcomes
  • View the calendar
  • View and read announcements
  • Send conversation messages to instructor and student

Canvas Parent Mobile Applications

Canvas Parent is designed to provide visibility into your child’s education at a glance. Canvas Parent allows parents to:

  • View assignment descriptions and due dates
  • Set reminders for assignments
  • View assignment grades
  • View course grades
  • Set grade alerts
  • View course announcements

Account Setup Instructions

Please note you will need the following information to complete account setup

  • Student Emails are: firstname.lastname@rebels.ridgenet.org
  • Student Passwords are unique: Student must provide you with this information

iOS Mobile Device Instructions

  1. Download & open free iTunes app ­­- Canvas Parent 
  2. Create Account: Tap the Create Account link
  3. Create Account Details: Enter your personal information and tap Create Account button
  4. Add Student: Tap the Add Student button
  5. Find your student’s school or district
    • Enter Institution: Ridgewood Community High School.  If it does not appear, enter ridgenet.
  6. To connect to your student’s account, have your student log in via Google with school email credentials
    • You will only need to complete previous step once to link accounts
    • Add other students by tapping the gear in the upper right corner, then tap +
  7. You are done! Your account is linked to your student’s information

Android Mobile Device Instructions

  1. Install free app from Google Play Store­­ - Canvas Parent
  2. Create Account: Tap the Create Account link
  3. Create Account Details: Enter your personal information and tap Create Account button
  4. Enter Student’s Institution
    • Enter Institution: Ridgewood Community High School. If it does not appear, enter ridgenet.
  5. Log in your student via Google with student's school email credentials
    • You will only need to complete previous step once to link accounts
    • To add another student, tap the gear in the upper right corner, tap menu in upper right corner, then tap Add Student
  6. You are done! Your account is linked to your student’s information

Application Instructions

  1. Settings Gear Icon: Add alerts and additional students for siblings
  2. View Dashboard: See courses, weekly calendar and alerts
  3. Courses: Snapshot of current overall grade assignment grades
  4. Week: Displays calendar of assignments and events for a given week
  5. Alerts: Notifications for grades and assignments
